What No One Tells You About Starting Your Healing Journey

Most people think healing begins with peace—a lightbulb moment, a yoga mat, a prayer, a therapist’s couch. And while all of those things can be part of the process, the truth is—healing often starts with chaos.

What no one tells you is that when you decide to face your pain, things might get messier before they get better. Old memories resurface. Emotions you’ve pushed down for years start bubbling up without warning. You may even question if you're "doing it wrong" because it doesn’t feel like healing—it feels like unraveling. But that unraveling? That’s the beginning of becoming whole.

Healing Isn’t Linear, It’s Layered

You’ll revisit the same wounds more than once. Not because you’re failing, but because healing happens in layers. What you can face now, you might not have been ready to face last year. And that’s okay. Growth is not as straight and linear as you may have heard. It’s messy, a spiral—with deeper understanding each time you return.

You Might Grieve the You That Survived

Sometimes, we romanticize transformation, but what’s rarely talked about is the grief that comes with letting go of who you had to be to survive. That version of you—whether numb, reactive, perfectionistic, or people-pleasing—protected you. And as you heal, you may feel lost without those defense mechanisms. There is also the grief that comes with realizing the version of you who went through the trauma was never protected. It is a confusing time to unravel the pain and unmask the version of you showing up to survive. But trust me, the real you—the free you—is worth discovering.

The Little Things Are Actually the Big Things

Most breakthroughs don’t come in grand moments. They come in the quiet:

  • Saying “no” without apologizing.

  • Crying in therapy and not brushing it off.

  • Choosing to pray or journal instead of spiraling.

  • Walking away from a toxic conversation.

  • Noticing your triggers instead of reacting to them.

  • Starting a new hobby or going after a goal you've been postponing.

Celebrate those moments. They matter more than you think.

There Is No One Way to Heal

Faith, therapy, coaching, boundaries, community, movement, stillness—there are many healing paths. What worked for someone else might not work for you, and that’s okay. God created you uniquely, which means your journey will be, too.

As we raise awareness around mental health this month, I want to remind you that you are not broken. You are healing from a pain that no longer serves you. And the fact that you’re even reading this? That means you’ve already started.
